Will you help us care for our Oakfield Oldies?

Imagine spending your whole life with your best friend. Curling up on the sofa, enjoying the warmth, comfort, and safety of your home as the cold nights start drawing in. Getting older but still happily playing together, enjoying tasty festive treats, and leisurely strolls in the park beneath the twinkling Christmas lights. Then one day, out of the blue, everything changes. You’re taken away from everything you’ve ever known and find yourself somewhere unfamiliar.

Sadly, that’s the reality for many dogs who come into our care. Dogs like Pauly and Safia. Pauly, a charismatic and affectionate 7-year-old Chihuahua, and Safia, a beautiful 13-year-old Staffie cross who still has a real zest for life despite her age, came to us after their owner could no longer care for them. Unfortunately, for older dogs who suddenly find themselves without the familiarity of their everyday routines, the adjustment to life in kennels can be a big one and once in their twilight years, they run the risk of being overlooked and can be harder to rehome.

At Dogs Trust, we realised that some of our older dogs needed a few more home comforts during their stay with us and that’s why we created the Oakfield Old Dogs’ Home. This wonderful facility is equipped with everything an older dog could wish for. There is a living room with soft sofas for snuggling and warm blankets to bury under, and a private garden for the dogs to play in. When Pauly and Safia first arrived, they were nervous and timid, but after receiving loving care and attention in our Oakfield Old Dogs’ Home they soon came out of their shell and began showing off their playful, affectionate side. Most importantly, they were able to stay together, comforting each other in their new surroundings. 

At Oakfield, we’re able to give our senior residents the love, care, and attention they deserve, until the day comes when they find their forever home. But it is only with the support of kind dog lovers like you that we can run this bespoke facility and care for our Oakfield Oldies during their time with us. Here at Dogs Trust, we never put a healthy dog down. But there can be added costs involved with caring for older dogs due to age-related conditions, which are often long term. As we receive no government funding, we are entirely reliant on our supporters to be there for our Oldies, caring for them in this unique environment whilst they wait to find their forever home. In this special community, every oldie gets to live as they need to.
