Bereavement support and advice

We understand how painful it can be to lose a special dog, and we want to support you however we can during this difficult time. Below you can find relevant resources and advice to help you during this tough time.

Spend time with your loved ones

It's important to spend time with your friends or family, try not to distance yourself from those closest to you. Talking to your friends, family and support unit about how you are feeling and what you might need to feel supported can be beneficial during this time.

Be patient

Take time to process the pain you are feeling and take note of anything that is particularly challenging during this time of loss so that you can keep a track of your feelings and how to cope with these triggers. It's important to remember that there is no rush, and grieving can take time. Try not to pressure yourself during this process.

Take care of yourself

Although it can be hard to cope after the loss of a loved one, it is important to take care of yourself. Make sure you are getting enough sleep, eating correctly and still partaking in hobbies and activities that you enjoy.

Grief is unique

Allow yourself to grieve in your own way and at your own pace, each person has their own ways of expressing their grief and there is no right or wrong way to process your emotions. Some people may find solace in activities such as taking a walk, swimming, being out in nature, or by engaging in creative outlets like writing or painting. On the other hand, some people may find it more beneficial to discuss their thoughts and memories of the departed with loved ones or seek guidance from a medical professional.

Beyond dog ownership

Considering life beyond dog ownership can be difficult. We're here to help.

Take part in events

Celebrate the life of a loved one, and reflect on the special bond that you built by taking part in a memorial event.

Join our memory walk

Join us as we walk to remember our old friends. You can either take part in our group walk at Salcey Forest, or you can create your own walk, as we come together to walk in celebration of a person or dog we have loved and lost.

You can sign up below to participate in our event and walk for those beloved ones we have lost.

Help others when you are ready

If you feel prepared, you might like to volunteer at one of our centers across the UK. By doing so, you can provide support and companionship to the dogs in our care, many of whom have experienced the loss of a loved one, just as you might have. Your presence can help them heal and find comfort during a difficult time.

Volunteering not only benefits the animals but also offers you a chance to connect, heal, and make a positive impact in the lives of these deserving pets.

Volunteering

As the UK’s largest rehoming charity, we have every breed of opportunity for you to get involved with, to match all manner of interests and skillsets.
