Setting up our dog food bank
The aim of the dog food bank service is to help local dog owners in need.
With the cost of living rising so drastically, there has been an inevitable increase in the amount of dogs that we have seen handed into our care, especially as changes to people's personal and financial situation are already some of the main factors driving people to rehome their dogs.
To try to help reduce the effect that the cost of living crisis has on dog owners, we have decided that it would be beneficial to set up a resource to mitigate the impact that the crisis is having on dog owners. Our main goal is to provide assistance to anyone who is financially struggling, but ultimately, to prevent anyone from struggling to the point that they feel that the best thing for their dog is to relinquish care.
The response to our food bank has been very encouraging on social media and the donations poured in at a resounding rate. It was very rewarding to see the community come together! It did take a little longer before we had people that came in to use the food bank, but they have been very grateful.
One customer who used our food bank had two small dogs and had just lost her job, she sold her car and had to rely on public transport. She received some food from our service and was very thankful. She said she was going to spread the word about the service but also was looking forward to being able to donate to it when she was able to.
The team here at Glasgow have also reached out to some local community centres to inform them of our food bank service, and we have had a few people use the service from this.
We're very proud of setting up this wonderful service at Dogs Trust Glasgow. Whilst we still look forward to a future where food banks are not needed in our society, we are delighted to be able to offer some support to those in need during these challenging times.
