Which dog is right for me?

Whether you’re looking for the perfect family pet, a snuggle buddy or a running Rover, there’s a hound for every type of home.

Every dog is different, with their own quirks and personalities. Some love nothing more than snuggles on the sofa, while others are active and outdoorsy. Some dogs, regardless of breed, might be more outgoing and confident, while others would prefer a quieter home with few visitors. Finding your perfect match might take time, but it’ll be worth the wait.

Discover different breeds

Although each dog is individual, you might find that information about a breed could give you an idea about how they might fit into your home and lifestyle. If you’re an outdoorsy person, you should consider which breeds might be more suited to joining you on a hike.

Our most popular breed pages will tell you their typical size, the type of environment they tend to be able to live in, how much they tend to shed and their typical exercise needs.

The Kennel Club has information about all sorts of breeds, from the most common to some you might not have considered but could be an ideal match for you.

Make sure you spend some time looking at different breed characteristics at different ages and both sexes. You should be aware of any common health issues your chosen breeds might have, as well as inherited diseases.

What's the right breed for me?

All dogs are wonderful, no matter their breed. But you might discover that some breeds suit you, your family and your circumstances a bit better than others.
