Quick and easy Halloween treats for your pooch

Halloween treats at Dogs Trust rehoming centre

Halloween sweets, especially chocolate, can be toxic for dogs. But that doesn’t mean your pooch has to miss out on the treats — make them some dog-friendly spooky Halloween treats instead.

These quick and easy recipes are great as a training reward and to have on hand to distract your dog from human snacks.

Recipe 1: Pumpkin spice and peanut butter spookies

Ingredients

  • 1 sweet potato
  • 140g wholewheat flour
  • 140g peanut butter (must be xylitol free)
  • 1 cooking pumpkin
  • Pinch of cinnamon

Method

  1. Puree pumpkin
  2. Peel and chop the sweet potato
  3. Boil until soft
  4. Let cool
  5. Mash the potato
  6. Add peanut butter, pumpkin, flour, and cinnamon
  7. Combine into a dough
  8. Roll out flat
  9. Cut into shape
  10. Add to baking tray
  11. Bake for 15-20 minutes at 200 degrees Celsius.

And remember...

When you make these tasty biscuits, reduce your dog’s usual food portion so they’re not overfed. Some dogs could have sensitivities to the ingredients, so these might not be suitable for all pooches. If you’re concerned about giving your dog new foods speak to your vet.

Recipe 2: Freaky frozen treats

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cucumber
  • 1 bag of spinach
  • 140g strawberries
  • 140g frozen mango
  • 200ml of water

Method:

  1. Chop cucumber
  2. Slice strawberries
  3. Blend all ingredients together with water
  4. Pour into silicone mould
  5. Freeze overnight
  6. Serve!
