A happy home for patient Underdog Toffee
This overlooked Hound spent a total of 676 days with us before finding his paw-fect match.

Toffee came to us when he was just two years old after his owner could no longer care for him. He was quickly adopted, but in true Hound fashion, his enthusiastic vocalizations made outdoor adventures a little too lively for his new family. After only three weeks, he was returned to us. Fortunately, it wasn’t long before he found another home, and we were thrilled to see him set off on his next adventure.
Sadly, six years later, Toffee was once again back with us—this time, through no fault of his own.
Training Toffee for a forever home
Returning to kennel life after so many years in a home was a difficult adjustment for Toffee, who could become frustrated and vocal around other dogs. We knew we had to help him improve his social skills, so we developed a tailored training plan.
He learned loose-lead walking, and we even taught him a simple cue to manage his vocal outbursts—a finger to the lips would instantly grab his attention! With time and patience, we were also able to introduce him to some canine companions, and he even gained the occasional walking buddy.
Despite his progress, finding Toffee a forever home proved challenging. Being an older dog, at nine years old, and having specific training needs meant that this patient pup was often overlooked. Toffee became one of our Underdogs, an affectionate term for dogs who have been with us for over six months.
But we never lost hope. Toffee had become a staff favourite—not only for his playful, affectionate nature and legendary bear hugs but also for his chattiness and ability to hold a "conversation"!
A paw-fect match arrives
We waited, knowing the right home was out there. And nearly two years later, the perfect adopters came along. They committed to getting to know Toffee, visiting him multiple times a week to learn his training routines and build trust. It didn’t take long for them to fall in love with our handsome hound, and on Christmas Eve, Toffee finally left us to start his new life.
Since then, he has settled in beautifully, spending his days doing all the things he loves with people who adore him. We couldn't have wished for a happier ending for our beloved Toffee.
Everyone at Dogs Trust did a fantastic job at helping us through Toffee’s adoption… The home visits to help Toffee get used to his new home were so useful and the follow up calls to check on his progress and settling in have also been great.
Toffee's forever family
Toffee is now very settled in his new home, and can even relax when left alone. He loves looking out of the window to his new view, and exploring his very own garden.
