Our hydrotherapy training centre

It's all going swimmingly at the Darlington hydrotherapy centre.

Hydrotherapy for our canine pals has become an increasingly popular way to aid and improve their health. We are very lucky to have our very own Hydrotherapy suite here at the centre to provide this type of care to our residents.

Hydrotherapy is non weight bearing exercise carried out in a pool or underwater treadmill. With the properties of water being used to its full advantage it makes exercising seem weightless and provides a great therapeutic effect. Hydrotherapy can be great for dogs of all size, shape, and age. It’s used for a variety of reasons from post-surgery for an injury to helping with general fitness.

There are so many benefits to be seen such as improving range of motion to joints, relieving pain, and building up muscle mass. It’s also a brilliant activity that provides mental stimulation as well as physical!

Our underwater treadmill and pool

We are fortunate to have an underwater treadmill and pool! Both are heated to a temperature of 30 degrees giving the dogs that spa like treatment. For the underwater treadmill dogs enter through a glass door and it is filled to the desired depth. Speed and frequency can be controlled a bit like the treadmills you would find at the local gym.

For the 8000L pool, dogs are kitted out with a life jacket and guided with their swimming pattern. Jets can be used to create more resistance within the water for a more challenging workout.

Let us show you around!

Larissa joined the Darlington team in August this year as our first Veterinary Physiotherapist/ Hydrotherapist and has already helped 40 of our dogs.

All the dogs featured in the video above have happily found their forever homes.

My childhood dog, a German shorthaired pointer, really deteriorated when he got older and his back end went. I wanted to help him but didn’t know how! When I saw veterinary physiotherapy as a career, I thought I would love to be able to help animals in pain and enhance their lives!

All of our dogs have been assessed and vet checked before receiving hydrotherapy.

Please note the hydrotherapy facilities are for the use of the centre and we are unable to offer this service to the public.
