Rehoming success for Bertie
Read the heartwarming story of how Bertie's medical complications didn't stop him from finding his forever home.
Bertie first came to our centre with his mum and 4 other littermates. While most of the pups that come into our centre often fly out of the door. For 8 week old Bertie, things were a little different.
After a routine vet check it was found out that poor little Bertie had Entropion, a condition where the lower eyelids droop away from the eye and invert, causing eyelashes to irritate the eye. This needed correcting to get Bertie comfortable.
Bertie underwent surgeries to correct the condition. During assessment Bertie was found to be uncomfortable around other dogs but at the time of rehoming he was only around 4 months old so it was hoped this might improve with time and positive interactions.
Bertie was in his new home for a year, but was then sadly returned to us as his new adopters were struggling to cope with his anxiety around new experiences and other dogs. When Bertie returned, he appeared to be in discomfort, and through investigations it was found that Bertie’s eye surgeries needed to be redone and that he also had hip and elbow dysplasia. A further surgery to correct his Entropion, long term pain relief, behavioural medication and some dedicated training from our behavioural team and a year on, Bertie was finally on the road to adoption success.
After the amount of time Bertie spent in Kennels, we decided to make him one of our Underdogs, a programme created by us to promote our longer-term residents who may have less interest due to medical or behavioural requirements, and through this appeal Bertie gained attention.
Bertie has now found a wonderful home with adopters who say:
It has been wonderful to adopt a dog like Bertie. He has changed our lives and settled in beautifully with our family. It has been wonderful to see his confidence grow over the few weeks we have had him. He was an anxious dog but settled in really quickly and seems much happier and more relaxed. We would strongly urge anyone seeking to adopt from a shelter to give an underdog a go. It’s great to know we have made such a difference to Berties life.
